Another monstrous release on the Playmore Terrys label from the Ibiza king

Welcome to DMCWORLD Jason, yet again you have The Buzz Chart office jumping around thanks to another Playmore Terrys release, this time it’s ‘Beats Don’t Sleep’ doing the dancefloor damage. Talk us through the tune…

“It’s basically inspired by the mid to late 90’s house and garage sound. It’s all about the grooves on this one. I think it captures the moment.”

Tell us about your label Playmore Terrys – what was the whole idea behind it?

“I was playing a gig a few years back, can’t remember where but this fella came up to me and said ‘what a Terry’ as in Terry & June = TUNE. From then on I couldn’t stop saying it when a tune dropped, then everyone else started saying it. I then released some music through a label called Playmore run by Dave Red Soul in the UK and after a few releases we decided to start a new label and called it Playmore Terrys…it made sense really, sort off.”

What are the next releases from the label…?

“Releases for the future include the likes of Clara Da Costa, Andy & Craig Baxter, Alex Wolfenden, Andrew Dale and a young star in the making Eb Original from Amsterdam.”

Another June and another buzzing week of opening parties around the island. Word on the street is that you thought the opening of Café Mambo was the best ever…?

“Yeah it was really rocking. Pete Gooding played the perfect sunset followed by John Digweed who was smooth as you like – then myself Baxter and Mat Charles jacked it out till the end, no one would leave till the end.”

Has Mambo the best sunset in Ibiza?

“There are a few wicked places to watch the sunset in Ibiza, however Mambo has the Terrys to watch it to. We still get about 5000 people down on the strip in the height of summer, its quite incredible really.”

Today of course saw the news that Bomba has officially got it’s license – this place is going to be a great addition to Ibiza’s already hectic nightlife, right?

“Yeah I’m really happy for the guys down at Bomba, they know how to put a good show on and I can only see great things happening there. Haven’t been in the club since it was Angels back in 95, can’t wait to see what they have done to the place.”

What is the current top 10 you are playing?

The island has certainly changed in recent years. Big money has come in and all of a sudden the island is big business. Are you happy with all of these new clubs, hotels, bars and restaurants shooting up?

“It was inevitable really, I mean I love my music more than anything (apart from the missus) and I’m blessed to have been given the opportunity to DJ and live in Ibiza for so long. But times change and money becomes a big factor when you have such a powerful brand as the island has itself. It’s all gone a bit like the football has in the last ten years, silly fees for DJs who ain’t got a clue what the island is about, making ridiculous adverts where a certain DJ is covering the his wife’s nipples up like she’s Janet Jackson. Leave it, not tasteful at all. However the bubble is bursting hard, and I quite fancy blowing the next one up myself.”

Tell us about some of the more key parties you’re looking forward to this summer…

“Well my residency at We Love…Space is still going strong. 14 years I’ve been playing that club and it still rocks. Would be hard to find better promoters than Darren Hughes and the Broadbents. Lots of sunsets at Mambo of course and a date at the Dalt Villa with Annie Mac in September will be huge. Some really cool boat parties going down with the Mantra crew from London and something really special we started at Pikes at the end of last summer called The Lady & The Tramps with myself, Clara, Andy and Alex at various venues around the island. The new Vista room at Privilege is exciting as well.”

You have been one of the important figures on the island for many years. Give us a few reasons you will never leave Ibiza…

“I’ve lived on the island for 20 years on and off, I’m full time here at the moment but things change sometimes during the winter months and I’ll spend time elsewhere, mainly Australia in the past. Ibiza is magnetised to me for some reason that I don’t try to think to much about too much. Just enjoy the moment…”

So we head back the house of Bye after the beach – what is the Jason Bye Back To Mine 10 you spin us as the sun goes down…

“Now there’s a question I can only answer with this mix http://soundcloud.com/jason-bye/971clubclassicsvol2

As a DJ, what has been your favourite moments ever on the decks on the white isle?

“There are a lot, but these are the things that usually come back to me; playing in Amnesia 1995 while the roof was sliding open at about 9am to the sounds of ‘Gat Decor ‘Passion’. The Cream opening party at Ku in ‘95 as well, dropping the acapella of Robert Owens ‘Tears’ while mixing it in with Orbital ‘Chime’. The old Space terrace at about two in the afternoon dropping loads of siesta beats, the gaff used to go off like you can’t believe, well maybe you can if you were there. And just recently, I had a nice little back to back with Eats Everything at Mambo before Tongy kicked us off. We rocked it.”

Who are your big DJ mates in Ibiza?

“I mean over the years I’ve become friends with most of my peers, the list is endless. Every turn there’s an old buddy up to something. Usually Blocko.”

Tell the readers of DMCWORLD why so many residents love Ibiza in the winter…

“Cos we get the island back, pull out our BMX’s and ride like the wind – and finally get to eat as well.”

Take us back to the first time you ever stepped onto Ibiza. What were the clubs you ventured to, who was playing and what songs can you remember from that time?

“This is quite funny really. I first came to Ibiza in 1992 on a Club 18-30 holiday (twice). Only went down the West End for 2 weeks, didn’t even really know much about the big clubs apart from the reps advising us not to go as it was not our kind of thing – bullshit.” The following year I came back for the whole summer and went to the Amnesia opening party with Javier the owner from Mambo. It changed my life forever. What a club, I felt like I was at home at last, and I was.”

Fact or fiction, you used to DJ in your boxer shorts at Es Paradis?

“Hahah. Alex P did it first, I was just copying him. I later moved on to sarongs. You liked a nice sarong to if I remember correctly Dan!”

What song will always remember you of Ibiza?

“Jay Dee – ‘Plastic Dreams’.”

And finally – who are your favourite three Terry’s of all time?

“Just off the top of my head.

1. Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’

2. Gat Decor ‘Passion’

3. Morels Grooves Part 4 ‘Let’s Groove’- George Morel

“And the list could go on and on…”
