Max Elto

The Stockholm duo return with the delicious ‘Backyard Animals’

Interview : Dan Prince

Alex, Tom welcome to DMCWORLD – where in the world are you right now?

“Right now Dan we’re in Stockholm, Sweden.”

Yet again you have supplied us with some more music to go crazy to, this time around it’s ‘Backyard Animals’ causing mayhem on the dancefloor. Talk us through this delicious downbeat electro tune, what’s it all about?

“It’s a darker song about learning to live with the mistakes you’ve made. ‘Backyard Animals’ works as kind of a symbol for what is perceived as “sins” and how you with time collect quite a few of them. Everyone has them and everyone tries to live with them.”

You two seem a match made in heaven; Tom supplying the deep house/electro grooves with pop sensibilities and Alex with the soulful voice to die for. How did you two first meet and conjure up the partnership?

“Fate.”

Alex – tell us about some of the vocalists that were an influence to you growing up?

“Michael Jackson.”

Tom – who are some of the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“Quincy Jones.”

Do you ever argue about music…?

“Sometimes, but usually Max breaks it up and helps us find a good middle ground.”

What is the best and worst thing about being musicians living in Stockholm?

“There’s tons of inspiration, however there is not a lot of sun.”

Who are your big producer friends from your home city?

“We don’t have any friends.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Max Elto – Backyard Animals (Original Mix)

Jon Hopkins – Open Eye Signal (Original Mix)

Kölsch – Goldfisch (Original Mix)

Max Elto – Open Door (Original Mix)

Oliver – Control (Nom De Strip Remix)

Lauren Lane – Cool Kids (Original Mix)

Pan-Pot – The Mirror (Original Mix)

Bonobo – Eyesdown (Sasha Remix)

Kryder – Aphrodite (Original Mix)

Betoko – Supersonic (Tube & Berger Remix)

You were over in the UK this Spring hitting the likes of Liverpool and Glasgow. What do you make of us Brits on the dancefloor – where stood out for you?

“You know what you’re doing on the dancefloor, to say the least. I think Sunderland was one of the most energetic places so far.”

It may not be good for our image, but Max Elto really love…?

“Stockholm.”

Favourite record of 2013?

“Tube & Berger – Imprint of Pleasure (Original Mix).”

Whenever I read anything about you guys, journalists and magazines always use the word ‘mysterious’. Is that part of the game plan or do you really not like the limelight?

“I really don’t know why, we just make music.”

How do you overcome writers block?

“The best thing to do is to get yourself into a new environment, doesn’t matter if it’s physical or mental.”

Stand out gigs from the summer of 2013?

“We didn’t do any gigs this summer, we were busy shooting videos and recording new music.”

What was the last GREAT album you listened to?

“Fleetwood Mac – ‘Fleetwood Mac’.”

And finally, what is coming out next studio wise from you guys?

“Everything ! We really don’t have many rules in the studio, all we try to do is to go where Max guides us.”
