Paris Green - Redrum

Hi Mitchel how are you and where are you based at the moment?

I’m good thank you. I’m based in Amsterdam.

For our readers that aren’t familiar with you, can you please tell them a bit about yourself?

Music producer from Amsterdam who has an obsession with mixed martial arts.

Can you tell us about where the name Paris Green came from?

It simply sounded really cool to me. And I always had this obsession with Paris as I visited it 15 times.

You shot to fame when Kölsch discovered you on his BBC Radio 1 show. How did that happen and how did things change from there?

A friend of mine saw this link where he was requesting demos. It was at a point when there was a lot of musicians face. You finish your music and you realize you have another marathon to run. How are you actually going to get it out there and get people to listen to it. So those two worlds gradually merged into each other. It’s was a big co-sign which led to the track getting signed by Damian Lazarus and Crosstown Rebels.

You are releasing your debut album ‘Fear’ on Needwant. Can you tell us more about how the album came together and your relationship with the label?

Well this actually connects a lot with the previous question. Sean from Needwant sent me a Facebook message after Kölsch played it on BBC Radio 1 and wanted to release the record. There were quite some offers, also considering the fact that I was (and still am) really green (no pun intended) in this world and at that point I felt Crosstown Rebels was the right one. We always kept in touch. He has a really good ear in picking the right ones in everything I make, and I make a lot of music. And I mean a lot of music. Quick example. Recently I send him 150 tracks where he selected 30 of them considering the right ones. Buy link

Which is your favourite track on the album and why?

The funniest thing about it is that it varies. But if I had to choose one I think it’s ‘Four Five’ because it’s simplicity. It’s easier for me to make those atmospheric, euphoric chords which give you that type of feeling, but way harder to make a simple club banger. And I really like the gospel element in it.

We hear you have an interest in art, design and fashion. Can you tell us more?

Because it’s ability to blend different genres and modernize it. I approach music the same way. For instance, take the featuring with Marvin Gaye. It’s a 70’s pscychedelic rock bassline, combined with a soul vocal and 2020 drums. Mixing elements that shouldn’t work together but actually do.
Also they have a really good sense for space which also translates to making music. Less is more. And it’s really hard to recognize when you’ve done enough, you always have a tendency to do more.

Can you tell us more about your production process? Do you prefer analog or digital?

It’s about chasing the idea. I have no preference in whatsoever. But ideas almost always start on my laptop but after the main idea is done, I’ll replace the sounds with analog gear.

Who are your biggest music influences and why?

Kanye West. Because I don’t know many artists who have such longevity in their career and have the ability to grow consistently better during time. His ability to innovate and mix genres is quite remarkable.

When it comes to DJing and producing, which do you prefer and why?

I definitely prefer DJing. There’s no place in life where I’m most confident than behind turntables. All my insecurities just roll of my back.

With things opening back up after lockdowns, what are you most looking forward to?

Finally being able to cross the border and go on a road trip with some friends.

Lastly, are there any exciting upcoming projects you can tell us about?

Building the liveshow around the album with a band.
