The master of the Sunrise ceremony returns to take control of the greatest trance series of them all
Interview : Dan Prince
Richard welcome back to DMC and congratulations on another superb In Search Of Sunrise release. Where in the world are you right now?
“Hi Dan, currently I’m sitting with my cup of coffee in Amsterdam!”
Cool. Well, the series in the past has checked into the likes of South Africa, India and Australia, this time round it just had to be America in light of the complete turn around in dance music’s state of affairs the country is experiencing at the moment. So why Las Vegas, the US has a multitude of cities you could have chosen?
“I think Las Vegas is the leader at this time when it comes to EDM. Ibiza has had that for years and as you can now see, it has now shifted to the US…and in particular to Las Vegas. This city is buzzing now! There you have so many top events with the biggest DJs 24/7.”
Tell us about the creation process of the albums…
“It all starts with the collection of tracks, many producers know that another new ISOS arrives every year. Then usually I go into the studio to make my own tracks for the CD. But it could also be that I’m looking for yet unreleased records. After that it is time to mix, which is not always easy. I think there should be a beautiful building up track on the CD. And the end of the day, both CDs need to have the same quility and ISOS feeling as the previous.”

The road to absolute big-room and providing a big solid build-up.

Powerfull and energetic with a pretty, elegant breakdown.
03 Steve Kaetzel – Floe (Alex O’Rion Remix)
A very nice production with a cool melody, Alex is always powerful.
04 Boom Jinx, Maor Levi & Ashley Tomberlin – When You Loved Me (Original Mix)
They stripped it down and added their unique sound.
05 Cosmic Gate – Storm Chaser (KhoMha Remix)
Golden break and a rough, silver lining to kick in right after. Pure energy!
You claim to have enjoyed many a sunrise in Vegas. Where though are the best sunrises you have ever witnessed?
“I am lucky with my job that you see a lot of the world and visit many beautiful places and because I usually have to work at night and in the early morning, I hide from my bed during or after sunrise at haha. In India and Australia you can find very special one’s!”
The new compilation features a split in the compilation deck with Myon & Shane 54 producing a masterful mix – why did you choose these boys for Las Vegas…?
“Well firstly I find them very special as DJs and producers. They are fresh and very creative in their sound – and they are also very nice as people to work with.”
What advice if any did you offer to the boys regarding their mix?
“Nothing, I let them completely free to do what they wanted, their music is already in the isos sound, and they are good enough to make it work.”
Tell us about the new radio show…
“Because of the success of my album I decided to change my radio show. The music in the new readio show is closer to the sound of the music that I play in my sets.”
What is it about Ibiza you love, why does this island never lose it’s magic?
“Every year I have the same feeling! As the season begins on Ibiza the summer starts for me. I have traveled for many years to the island and every year it is great to come back!”
You new single ‘Running On Empty’ has been smashing up dancefloors this summer, what is coming out next from the mighty Durand studio…?
“I’m again busy in the studio with new productions, there will be a release of Eximinds and myself, it is the theme of isos11 plus another unreleased club edit, which does very well on the dance floor! So I’m very busy haha…”
You are hosting the Trance Stage with In Search Of Sunrise at the Ultrasonic Festival in your native Netherlands at the end of the month – where are some of the other festivals you are especially looking forward to this summer?
‘Yes there are still a few to go this year, I’m really looking forward to the Bali one (31-08-2013) which will probably be a very, very good festival!”
Best ever festival experience?
“I think it was two years ago when I had to play in Kiev for Global Gathering and the Godskitchen Fusion Cube, they were two really special parties.”
Who are some of the emerging new producers you are giving high fives to right now?
“I think you should keep an eye on Marc Sixma, he moved forward with his creativity and sound quality this year immensly.”
And finally, what has been the proudest moment of your career to date?
“Well I think that it was the first time that Godskitchen presented their Fusion Cube and I got the honour to open it. That was amazing!”
