The German electronic superstar hits London after smashing Ushuaia all summer long…

Interview : Nicky Trax

Welcome to DMCWORLD dude, an exciting week ahead with your debut at Circus at The End this weekend, you’ve played the venue before right?

“Hey Nicky, yes I know the venue as I played there a couple of months ago, but it`s my first time with Circus. The atmosphere of the club is just amazing anyway, but together with Yousef, it´s gonna be a blast off! and I can`t wait for it.”

What can the crowd expect from you musically on Friday?

“Music wise, the people can expect some proper banging beats from house to techno. One of my Ibiza favourites this summer is The Organ Grinder – Deep Undercover.”

Tell us about your studio process when making a new track…

“Usually I just sit down in the studio, or when travelling with my laptop, I just start jamming around. I pick one or two drum computers or the modular system and start building a beat, loop, hook or whatever. From there it is a free and organic process. When you have a remix to work on, you already have a theme to work around, but for my own productions it is more a jam session.”

Let’s rewind a little and go back to how you first got influenced by dance music, who were the DJs/producers that first got you excited?

“The very first time I got in touch with electronic underground music was through a weekly radio show called Clubnight hosted by Sven Väth, Ata, Heiko M/S/O, Mark Spoon, etc, which must have been around 1990. I remember that me and my friends were sitting in front of our tape decks and we couldn¹t wait to start recording the show. About one or two years later an older friend of mine smuggled me into The Omen in Frankfurt, Sven’s legendary home base. The atmosphere and energy in that little room was so mind blowing that I knew straight away this is my thing. Not long after that night I started buying records and saving for my first drum computer.”

What was your first breakthrough release that made people take notice of you out there?

“It started with my releases on Below Records like ´Charlotte´ or ´Vandong´. Also my first Cadenza record gave me a huge push too. At the end I guess it was ´Caminando´ released on ´Sei Es Drum´ – the label of Ricardo Villalobos, that really brought it to another level.”

And what about big early DJ shows that you still remember fondly?

“Wow, out of so many I would have to mention two special performances. The first one at Timewarp and the other one at Love Family Park. These shows helped me a lot.”

How do you feel the rise of digital software which has help breed a new generation of producers making massive records in their bedrooms?

“Digital software is just one possible tool to perform the way you want. As I have been performing live for many years, it suits me better than playing with USB, CD`s or Vinyl, as I have different options of editing, looping, EFX, etc. I would never say one is better than the other, everyone has to find the best way for himself. No doubt, it has become a lot easier, to get access to the music and to start experimenting how to DJ. But at the end, quality is all that matters.”

What can we expect next from you studio wise?

“I`ve been working on some new stuff and also remodelling some of my old tunes. I have a little mini album in the pipeline, that’s gonna be out on Deep Vibes Recordings in a few weeks. Currently I am working on some remixes too But of course it’s still summer time and I am touring a lot and I have my home base in Ibiza. After the season, I will go back to the studio and work on some new shit:”
