Boom! ‘Time To Get Down’ – the debut single! World exclusive

Roulsen might be a new name in the scene, but he is no newcomer to producing energy-charged electronic dance music as one half of the duo RoulnDoors. Fans around the globe became acquainted with the duo through a series of successful releases since 2008, such as “Blackout” and most recently “How We Do It”. However, the duo decided that with the New Year there would also be new beginnings; they decided to split ways in 2016 to pursue their passions individually. Now Roel, aka Roulsen, is back with “Time To Get Down”, a future house-influenced, smashing record that is all his own. He formulated the production style that blended melody, energy and emotion, which earned them a devoted fan base and support from some of the industry’s most respected producers. Hardwell, Tiesto, Fedde Le Grand, Danny Howard, Nicky Romero and many more are supporters of Roel’s music. Dan Prince checks in with this prolific producer set for an amazing year…

Roel – a huge welcome to DMCWORLD…where are you on this bright Spring day?

Hey DMC! I’m currently working from my apartment with Utrecht City skyline view J! The sun is shining and I’m just uploading the first episode of my radio show ‘Follow The Sound Radio’. Including a lot of exclusives and a guest mix from DJ Funkerman. Online soon!

What is the best piece of new music you have heard today?

I’m loving ‘Sam Sure – Hunger’ at the moment…

Well well well! Major news rocked clubland on Janaury 25th that after 8 years RoulnDoors had decided to split to “pursue our own journey in music and in life in general.” How long have yourself and Stijn been talking about this and what were becoming the main stumbling blocks in your working relationship?

Last year, we decided that Stijn would be working behind the scenes and I would be performing alone. In this period, we felt it was time to go our separate ways. I’m still in love with (dance) music and can’t imagine not to create and play music for people around the world.

Have you seen each other as mates since you went your separate ways? It must be strange doing stuff on your now?

Yes, we are still buddies since we went our separate ways. It feels refreshing and good for both of us. It’s definitely a different way of working all by myself now but I’m learning quickly. I also have a great mgmt team who’s supporting me all the way…

Putting the split to one side, you have been true to your word and have hit the ground running with a new tune ‘Time To Get Down’ swinging our way on Flamingo – already getting big thumbs up from the likes of David Guetta and Afrojack. Talk us through the production and history of the track…

‘Time To Get Down’ guides the transition from RoulnDoors to Roulsen, as I started the track together with Doors. We started with a vocal sample and a clean sounding drop of the synth melody answered with the percussion bounce. At a writing session during ADE last year we met a talented writer Eric Lumiere. We had so much fun and creativity and before we knew ‘Time To Get Down’ was finished.

The big 5 tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each…

1. Yolanda Be Cool & D CUP – From Me To You (Tocadisco Remix)

I just love the vocals and vibe combined with the deep freaky drop from hero Tocadisco.

2. Wade – Collapsed Jam (Original Mix)

Oldskool sounding but in a very sexy and dope way.

3. Chocolate Puma – Listen To The Talk (Extended Mix)

These guys never stop producing bangers. Incredible.

4. Beauriche & Sander Kleinenberg – Footclub

Not available yet but a very dope remake of this classic by my buddy Beauriche and Sander Kleinenberg.

5. Loosid – I Want U (Original Mix)

Uplifting and bouncy! The break is perfect to add an acapella live to make the crowd sing along!

Tell us about some of the big DJ dates coming up that you’re looking forward to…

I’m looking forward to the festival season. The first festival for me is going to be paaspop (Easterpop) which includes a lot of bunny hopping and egg searches;)

Do you think 2015 was a good year for electronic music? A lot of people have their doubts?

I agree that the music scene faced some challenges in 2015. For me, 2016 is has already beaten 2015! Not only that I went solo, but the first releases of the year sound fresh and musical again.

What is coming out next from you studio wise?

I’m currently finishing a remix for a very cool track which I can’t tell you much about yet. J After that I’ve planned a lot of collaborations and solo tracks for you guys. More news is coming soon!

What is the No. 1 thing you are gonna miss about working with Stijn?

His talented ear for our music productions.

An up and coming producer to watch out for in 2016…

Pep & Rash.

The best piece of advice you have ever been given…

Follow your own sound…

It’s your birthday. Who are the 3 DJs you invite to play at your party…

Fedde le Grand, Skrillex and Roog…

An album in your collection we would be surprised to see?

Kanye West – The Life of Pablo.

And finally – let’s zip forward 12 months. What do you want to achieve in 2016?

I have so many plans and goals. Most importantly is getting as much great music as I can out there…
