SEFF

Over the past 20 years, SEFF has pretty much been there and done that. He has a robust house sound that has twisted and turned through many different influences, and is still essential today. Proof comes in the fact that Swerve Digital, New Violence and Mirror Numbers have all tapped him up for new EPs for the new year already. Here we speak to him about this new music, about how important support from his peers is and much more besides…

You have been round for 20 years, how have you evolved and changed in that time?

Many, many alias through many different genres which shan’t be mentioned haha. Luckily I went back to underground House and Techno though like the start.

Why has techno kept you coming back for more? What do you love about it?

The sheer darkness of it and overall feel and the clever productions and of course all ‘the crazy cats’.

Do you still get excited, shocked and surprised and blown away by the music you hear now, or have you heard it all before?

I went through a big stage of this, but just recently I have been getting completely blown away by some of the stuff I’ve been hearing and playing.

There is a lot of talk about how being great at social media now is more important than actual skill. What do you think?

I think it’s probably more important yes unfortunately but it’s 2018 and we just have to roll with it as it’s not going anywhere fast.

Tell us about some of the new music you have – what inspires or influxes you right now, what are your goals?

I have my ‘Vinyl To The Groove’ EP coming on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations sister label HotTrax with a remix but I’m not sure who by yet and dying to know who it’s going to be. I have lots more releases coming up too on various labels but the main aim is to get some of my own stuff properly locked in for release on ‘Mirror Numbers’ of course.

Do you write with certain labels, audiences and clubs in mind? Is that how you get started on a tune?  Sometimes yes but normally I’m always just experimenting anyway.

What’s it like getting high profile support from big names, does it add pressure or make you want to do the same thing again?

It really makes me buzz and want to just keep writing better material, the follow ups are always a bit of pressure on me though I find as you’re writing for a certain sound and I like to experiment mainly.

Tell us about your podcast series you have just started. Will it be like you in the club?

Yeah basically! it goes out on the first Friday of every month on Data Transmission and then the last Friday of the month on Pioneer DJ Radio. My new Mirror Numbers series is just that and certainly what I’d play at ‘Mirror Numbers’ events too.

Anything you would really like to achieve this year?

So much and I’m extremely driven to achieve all of it too. Mainly seeing my ‘Mirror Numbers’ brand grow which I already am at a rapid rate. Some releases on some other big labels wouldn’t go a miss and of course to get back out to my second home of Ibiza.

What was the last record you bought and why? What did you love about it?

Haha well it was actually my own first one on Hot Creations as I gave all of mine away.
