Sick Individuals

The electronic superstars from Utrecht continue their world domination…

Sick Individuals – where did the name come from?

On tour actually, in the early days, we had an MC and he used to shout “these guys are SICK!” or “check out these sick individuals etc.!” Easy does it to create your brand name.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Fever To The Form – Nick Nolte

What’s the most listened to album on your music player?

John Mayer – Continuum

What makes your studio?

The vibe, the interior and our equipment of course 🙂 We have two custom built studios in the middle of Holland and upstairs our SICK office.

What’s on your tech wish list and why?

Avalon VT747 analogue compressor because this gives your recording a beautiful, warm sound.

You’ve been very successful within the ‘big room / progressive’ era of EDM. With that sound on the wane and more melodic styles of music taking over, do you plan to stick with the big beats, or are you feeling a pull in a different direction musically?

We will always keep on producing club and progressive records, that’s where we started and we are certainly proud of them. But we are also focussing on crossover tracks. Our repertoire is already quite diverse and we don’t want be forced to only make a certain genre. It all comes down to creativity and being innovative that creates our identity which does change of course over the years.

How do you approach the production process? Is one of you more in the driving seat than the other when it comes to the creative decisions?

It’s been all about synergy and chemistry since the day we met during our conservatory years, so we always ‘aim’ for a mutual decision. Sometimes of course the discussions can take some time but it’s good to have such conversations that can lead to unique ideas actually!

You just released your FOCUS ONE plugin. How did that come about?

Long talks and we felt such specific software was missing. Eventually just to have the guts to start developing!

Why did you think it was necessary to create a SICK INDIVIDUALS plugin? What do you think it will bring to the home studio experience that you can’t already get?

We wanted to deliver a plugin that really delivered what producers need, one that gives better results faster. It took us two years to get it just the way we wanted it, but you should notice straight away the difference ‘FOCUS ONE’ makes to your composition. The plugin has five key features that can be really beneficial for your mix and with a low cpu. We really think the ‘FOCUS ONE’ is the perfect tool to improve your mix – it’s what we use ourselves so you know it’s going to be absolutely spot on.

Most home producers are looking to get that ‘big break’ – how did you get yours?

Next to working very hard you need to be creative to get into this industry and get your breakthrough. try to be innovative and don’t be a copy cat In our early days of our career we produced 20 remixes in one year, including some A-list artist remixes. These gained us a lot of exposure especially after our Icona Pop ‘I Love It’ remix. People started to appreciate our originals tracks more and more.

Which is more important, Spotify or Beatport, and why?

Spotify, it’s a monster and taking over the world, we use it everyday and it’s a great platform! Beatport is more like the ‘holy grail’ only for DJs and producers. they improved their platform last year though.

What venue or festival haven’t you played at yet and want to?

EDC Las Vegas, Coachella and many many more!

What are your tour plans over Christmas and the new year?

We’re going to be in Japan, studio time first during the week and then finish of with ‘This Is SICK’ performances in Tokyo and Osaka. After that time for the family of course!

What are you looking forward to most in 2018?

Releasing the records we are currently working on and tour all over the world!

Where do you see dance music going next?

Crossing over and over with multiple genres! It’s important that dance music keeps discovering itself.

And finally, where do you see Sick Individuals going next?

The next level!! Especially with our live show called ‘THIS IS SICK’ where we VJ/DJ and MC.
