Ronnie Spiteri

One of the UK’s most exciting new talents continues a stunning 2017…

Can you remember the first time you heard dance music and what it felt like? Why did you fall in love?

Yes my dad was into partying and when i was about 7 years old, him and his mates took me to a rave. It was epic ill never forget it! I fell in love with it so much because I could see how everyone was unified together and the connection everyone had with the DJ and the music was a feeling i had never felt before.

How long was it until you played out on the decks? Did it take long to learn? Where did you get your first break?

I think i was around 12 years old when i played on my dads decks at our house when all his friends used to come back from raves. My house was always the after party so i use to jump on the decks then. I picked it up naturally pretty quickly because I had learnt all about rhythm through watching my dad play. My first break was when I was around 18 years old when I got given my first Set/Residency at Junk Club in Southampton and then I held my Residency for around 8 years.

And in terms of production, when did you start? How long til you had a sound that was your own?

I started around 5 years ago and I think its only really been the last year or so where I have felt I have found my niche in the market and developed my own sound. That said of course music is always evolving and you have to stay ahead of the game and expand on what the dna of my your musicality is, so watch this space because there’s lots more variation in my musical style still to come to fruition, this is just the beginning for me.

And what is that sound, what are your aims in the studio?

My current musical style and aim in the studio is to make big chunky house music with a little hint of techno undertones in it and a constant groove through out.

You have your own label Kenja – what does it sound like, why start your own, has it been tough?

My Label Kenja records got started really as a platform to show people my productions and to bring other acts that i personally wanted to work with on-board to remix my tracks and also release original material!
Now the label is in a strong place and picking up lots of support from my peers and the general public i have artist’s that release a few times a year on the label like Rhymos, Hybrasil and myself!

You played Do Not Sleep in Ibiza recently – what was it like? What tunes went down well?

Yes it has been my best gig to date! To be honest I play a lot of my own stuff and I would say my track ‘Underwater’ currently always does it for me, not many people know about it just yet so it’s good to see the reaction it gets when I drop it.

You have lots of music coming out soon – can you talk us through some of the EPs?

Yes I had my debut release on Mobilee earlier this month, I also have EP’s coming out on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound, Steve Lawler’s Viva Music, Do Not Sleep and a track on Adam Beyer’s Truesoul. I’m over the moon to be signed to these labels, they’ll all be out over the next 4 months and will hopefully finish off what’s been a great year for me so far.

Do you make them all with certain labels in mind, do you tailor your sound to theirs?

First and foremost I always make music that I feel works for the punters on dance floor, and it’s great that the aforementioned labels want to sign my records, of course if they give me some constructive A&R advice with regards to it working better for them & their label, then I would take it fully on board as that’s what the working relationships with these type of premier record labels is all about, you grow and mature together with the label.
