DMC25 – Our Old Skool – Dave Seaman
Dave Seaman

DMC’s Brother In Rhythm…

What is your earliest memory of a DMC Mixing Final?
“Giving all the DJs the one minute warning finger in 1988 at the
Hippodrome. Hahaha”.

What during your time at your days at DMC, was the most memorable
Final/DMC event you ever witnessed?
“Definitely the Royal Albert Hall Dance Music Awards in 1988 when
James Brown came on stage. At the time it was the biggest event on the
music industry’s calendar. Way bigger than the Brits, which was a bit
of a joke at the time.”

How do you think the art of Turntablism has changed over the years –
technical/props/music used/precision etc?
“It’s a bit difficult for me to comment because I really haven’t
followed it for more than a decade. But I presume it’s a lot more
technical and less gimmicky than it was in the 80s and 90s?”

David, did you ever fancy a pop at entering the competition?
“Never. I’m not a Turntablist at all. “

Who do you think has been (in your time at the Finals) was the best
DJ we’ve ever seen?
“Cash Money was the man back in my day. Although as far as gimmicks
go, I don’t think DJ David actually spinning round on a Technics 1200
has ever been surpassed.”

What was the most common ever record you heard mixed and scratched
with at a Final?
“LL Cool J ‘Rock The Bells’ or ‘Al Naafiysh’ by Hashim. It ruined both
records for me for a long time. Hahaha…It’s taken 20 years for me to
fully appreciate them again!”

What is the best club you have played at this year?
“Pacha in Buenos Aires. South America is a real hotbed for clubbing
right now.”

You are one of two DJs I know who have an exceptional talent. Yousef can
stunt fall down a flight of stairs, you can Breakdance so well –
what’s your best move on the dancefloor?
“These days? Leaving the dancefloor would be my best move. Hahaha. My
breakdancing days are well and truly behind me. I’m a father now and
the old dad dancing disease has set in.”

Would you like your children to follow in your footsteps and become a
DJ?
“I’m really not bothered either way. There’s a lot worse things they
could choose. But I just intend to support them in whatever career
path they pursue.”

What is next coming from Dave Seaman DJ / production wise?
“I’ve just completed a single with Josh Gabriel called ‘Hayaah’ which
comes out this month on Josh’s Different Pieces label. And also
there’s another single, this time done with Andy Chatterley called ‘K
Conundrum’ which will be out on my own Audio Therapy imprint late in
September.”

And finally – what do you think is the biggest achievement that DMC
has brought to the world of DJing?
“DMC was really at the forefront of the art of remixing and making DJs
into stars in their own right. Arguably, they’re the most important
organization in DJ culture history.”
