Meet Goldierocks, one of the coolest girls spinning out in London at the moment…
You have been in the studio with Aaron Audio, some original tracks coming out before the end of January. Tell us about them…
“Oh it’s a really exciting time! And I love working at Sarm, it’s got such history, such musical significance, even in the middle of the night there’s this tension and a real buzzing creative ambience. We’re currently working in the studio where Bob Marley recorded ‘Exodus’ in. I’ve known Aaron for years, as a friend and also doing remixes together. Now it’s our time to crack out the party tracks. It’s a very LA/Hoxton sound, all live drums and pop strut beats…very chart friendly – think Ladyhawke/Gossip/Le Tigre. But we’re putting out all the singles with hard electro club edits that are quite minimal and more specialist for the dance heads.”
You have also written for loads of cool publications, Vice and Rockfeedback to name but two. What made you get into that?
“I started Music and Arts journalism when I was 18. That’s how everything got going really, interviewing bands and reviewing records. I was touring the UK with chums, going on adventures, doing features on artists and ended up DJing at these debauched parties – the rest was history!”
You also organised stages this year for Festivals such as The Secret Garden Party – too cool for school. What’s the story there?
“The Secret Garden Party is maybe my favourite festival ever! And this summer was the most magical yet. I met some amazing, inspiring people. And bringing my own gaggle of dear performance artist/VJ and DJ friends along to help with the proceedings on the main stage made it a life altering experience. Here’s to next year- see you in the Garden…”
Best tune you are playing at the moment?
“Metronomy ‘Heartbreaker’ (Discodeine Remix) – I ruddy love Metronomy. Mujava ‘Townhsip Funk’ is also touching all the right buttons this week.”
You have DJ’d at some trendy fashion parties during London Fashion Week last week, what stood out, what designers should we be looking out for?
“I’ve loved the gothic trend for years…there’s nothing more sensual than a lady in black lace. And no-one does tartan like Westwood. This winter I’ll be rocking killer heel biker boots, vintage Hermes look salves, sharp tailored skirt suits, Bridgette Bardot hair, my fella’s old cricket jumper and although I’m a religious frock wearer, oil slick leggings.”
What have been your blingest parties you’ve ever DJ’d at – and partied at?
“There’s been a few. Armani’s yacht in Monaco moored up at the Grand Prix, the Krug-a-flowing! Or at the MTV European Music Awards in Lisbon alongside Madonna and Justin Timberlake. The party lasted 3 days.”
Tell us about your own club night you run… the Goldierocks Soundsystem?
“The Goldierocks Soundsystem’ is my club night. We tour universities, festivals and clubs all over. It’s an interactive based party incorporating DJs, bands, VJs, dancers and live performance art. No set formula, no routine, just original and exciting festive experiences.”
When you were tiny, what records were you jumping around your bedroom to in your jim-jams? And also, what records were your parents playing in their living room?
“It was always an eclectic mix in our country house. Well my Dad loved Motown tunes with a huge brass section and big bold beats and my Mum was a real 70s love child -. all Cream, The Doors and Stevie Knicks. My Grandfather would play jazz and 1930’s swing and I remember falling in love with that magic vinyl crackle sound. In fact, I remember saving up After Eight packets and creating a huge vinyl collection for my Barbie’s full of big 80’s pop divas like Madonna, Kim Wilde and Cher.”
Your remix of The Kooks ‘Do You Wanna’ – a blast yeah?
“Yeah The Kooks are fun boys! And doing the remix was cool. I’ll be DJing at their massive aftershow at the Brighton leg of their UK tour.”
What do you think of Kate Moss?
“Erm, she’s alright…”
What’s the coolest thing about living in London?
“I love London! There’s nowhere quite like it. The people, the style, the pace, the soul. Whenever I travel I come back and getting a black cab over the Thames you find yourself breathing it all in. Right now, I wouldn’t exist anywhere else.”
What’s next for Goldierocks…?
“My first original track being released before the end of January, another Kooks remix and one for Cock & Bull Kid, going along for the ride on the Kanye West UK tour, lots of presenting bits and bobs, some dates in Barcelona and Berlin and then playing Fabric’s new venue ‘Matter’ at the O2 Millennium Dome in December. Exciting times.”
