Marc Mac & Dego’s 4hero outfit are now practically an institution, given their legacy for rave era classics, introducing the world to Goldie, Peshay, etc, and releasing era refining long players such as “Two Pages”. And that’s without even mentioning the Mercury nomination, the MOBO award, or the enduring pull of their version of “Les Fleur”. Whilst they’ve both been active elsewhere, “Play With The Changes” is the first new 4hero material in six years. Contributors include Larry Mizell, Little Brother, long-time collaborator Ursula Rucker, Jody Watley, all helping to capture that 4hero sound perfectly. Rich in attention to the most minute of detail, every string and bass note vibrates with black music history, perfectly summed up n the lush “Morning Child” (which sees Carina Andersson back on vocals). The love and passion brought to this recording shines through at every moment. If you’re expecting a revisiting of earlier work, this may be a surprise – this finds 4hero in mature mood, creating work that wants to bear witness to it’s heritage. Pure soul, from start to finish, as only 4hero know how.
