Ashford & Simpson
The Warner Bros. Years
Rhino

Subtitled ‘Hits, Remixes & Rarities’ this collection by the undisputed greatest husband and wife, singer, songwriter artnerships ever, succeeds as it’s compiled and remixed by those who know and love the duo’s music inside out: Tom Moulton, Joe Claussell, Dimitri From Paris, Tommy Musto and Paul Simpson with John Morales those plying their trade. ‘It Seems To Hang On’ is six minutes of disco perfection, while the percolating ‘Don’t Cost You Nothing’ and the proto-boogie of ‘Found A Cure’ and ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ originals and remixes are great pieces of art. Likewise A&S version of ‘Over And Over’ (a later hit for Sylvester) still sounds as good as ever. Their slickly produced, uptempo records, and in particular Ashford’s piercing falsetto (often a dead-ringer for Sylvester) shows the roots of disco without the glitz and commercialism. To coin a phrase from one of their ’80s hits - solid!
