Sven Väth’s annual round-up seems to arrive earlier each year – but maybe that’s just a sign of getting older! The now legendary spinner is celebrating 30 years as a DJ with this, the Twelfth Season – which has a lot more variety than previous mixes in the series. CD1 (‘Night’) starts in the murky depths of the DJ Koze remix of Efdemin’s ‘There Will Be Singing’, establishing a deep house template, before the full bodied beats start to assert themselves. Todd Terje’s ‘Ragysh’ is a highlight, with its distinctive chugging beat beefed up by a synth line or two, while Gary Beck’s ‘Enough Talk’ really shakes the bass bins before the euphoric rushes of sound supplied by Benoit & Sergio in ‘Let Me Count The Ways’. CD2 begins in a more gentle frame of mind but is soon up there with Steffi’s ‘Yours’ and Osunlade’s ‘Envision’, remixed by Âme, then feeling the funk with Maceo Plex’s irresistible ‘Falling’. This year, it feels like Cocoon and Väth have got it just right. Let the party start!
