Automat – Automat – (Bureau B)

The music of Automat falls firmly into the post-punk period. The trio of Jochen Arbeit, Achim Färber and zeitblom have made a debut album of big, booming bass and spacey guitar lines that galvanizes rather well, the culmination of three years’ acquaintance. It’s a concept album, based on Berlin and in particular its airports – which maybe explains why the closing ‘GWW’ is so bassy. The guest vocalists help their cause – ‘The Streets’, featuring the disembodied voice of Lydia Lunch, is a dubby treat, while ‘Mount Tamalpais’, with Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, is weird and paranoid. Ultimately Automat achieve a satisfying blend of dub and Krautrock, atmospheric and ever so slightly weird. Which is a good thing, of course!
