Is it wrong to suggest that Little Boots might be Kylie Minogue for the credit crunch? Certainly not if you take the lyrics to ‘New In Town’ for what they’re worth, where Victoria Hesketh sings “I don’t have a penny but I’ll show you a good time”. It’s one of several catchy songs on ‘Hands’, a compact piece of electronica that packs a good punch. As long as the synths stay relatively sharp this rule holds true for the rest of the album, though the quality does fall off a bit as the record progresses. ‘Stuck On Repeat’ and ‘Meddle’ are excellent songs, the former produced by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, while in the bonus track ‘Love Kills’ Hesketh shows that she doesn’t need an electronic backing to secure a good vocal – the piano on its own making just as big a statement. Kylie needn’t be too worried on this showing, but Little Boots does have big pretensions – and several songs to match.
