If you’ve got a soft spot for the soul divas from the sixties, then you need to check out this album. What we’ve got here is 8 gut wrenching show stoppers from Betty Lavette, plus 16 tearjerkers & shufflers from Carol Fran, many of the cuts are alternative takes, so that should get the collectors rustling in their Anoraks. Both ladies just ooze soul sister sassiness, with their gritty no frills approach, telling it like it is, without any of those pointless vocal gymnastics that today’s so called R’n’B singers are so fond of. Betty Lavette & Carol Fran really can do the do, singing it like they mean it. There’s a lesson to be learned here.
