On their debut album Battles face the challenge of taking the best elements of their revered live performances into the studio. ‘Mirrored’ confirms that they’ve succeeded, with an intense brand of musicianship that sees them improvising on one hand, punching out riffs with the other. A clear highlight is the superb ‘Tonto’, where a driving bassline propels the whole track over a large structure, while ‘Atlas’ speaks for itself, a mesh of samples and nervy vocals. Challenging stuff – but hugely rewarding as well.
