Brian Eno
Drums Between The Bells
Warp

Brian Eno is getting into his stride again where albums are concerned, and his second long player for warp focuses on the words of his poet collaborator Rick Holland. Rather than set them to music he opts to have them read out instead, which works better in some cases than others. When Eno’s sonorous voice begins with ‘Bless This Space’, and a bit of oddball funk, the signs are good – but the styles of music chop and change perhaps a bit too much even for Eno. That said, there are standout moments of both ambient calm and percussive noise, with the wig out on ‘Sounds Alien’ something of a showstopper. As always with Eno, the music is extremely interesting and worth hearing, even if it doesn’t always fully convince in the context of this album.
