Catz ‘N Dogz – Basic Colour Theory – (Pets Recordings)

In truth we were spoilt for choice when it came to selecting album of the week this time around, but the badge of honour goes to Polish duo Catz ‘N Dogz because they are so ridiculously versatile. Their ability to change style at the drop of a hat really helps when it comes to making an album of satisfying contrasts, and ‘Basic Colour Theory’ offers that and a whole lot more. It is also thought provoking, so when it comes to the vocal of ‘Nobody Cares’ – which concludes how “nobody cares these days” over an earthy rhythm – the sentiment is really well conveyed. This is just the tip of the iceberg though, as ‘Killing With Kindness’ is a smoky cracker, alternating a break beat with solid house action, while ‘Stay’ is a softly brushed electro track that could have appeared on an early Warp release. ‘From Your Heart’ is a slower disco jam with a great vocal from Peter Bjorn & John, its catchphrase “shoot a bullet from your heart” arguably the best of a hook filled album. As if that wasn’t enough, the beats for ‘Keep On’, where Green Velvet gets involved, are simply irresistible. “Just be yourself”, he says – so do that, and go and buy this album.
