Chihei Hatakeyama & Dirk Serries – The Storm Of Silence – (Glacial Movements)

Japan and Belgium come together for this wonderfully calming suite of four pieces on the Glacial Movements label, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. As with other releases on the imprint, ‘The Storm Of Silence’ has a widescreen sound that paints an awesome mind’s eye picture of weather, but it does so quietly and majestically, the music moving so slowly that changes are almost imperceptible. It is an incredibly effective tactic though, and the soothing ambience and consonant harmonies work their magic on even the most frazzled brain. Each of the four quarters of the album is around the 10 minute mark, giving the listener the chance to lose themselves completely in the clear, blue textures – which prove every bit as chilled as the album cover suggests they should be. Subtle but very beautiful.
