CICADA

Critical Mass

Similarly inspired by what’s gone before, in recent times Cicada have primarily enjoyed acclaim through electro-etched remixes for Depeche Mode, New Order and Seelenluft; more so then their own releases. Their sound is distinctly clean, crisp, and at times über cool. ‘The Things You Say’, with vocals from Heidrum Bjornsdottie sounds remarkably like the Cardigans’ Nina Persson, as is by far the most accessible of the set’s content. Free flowing with tracks blending into one another, their ice cool productions are a unique take on the electronica bug currently rife in club culture: ‘Electric Blue’ (borrowing a riff from Whodini), the sonic boom of ‘Edge’ melding Jean Michel Jarre riffs with the Chemical Brothers basslines, and Ben Onono’s dreamy vocals on the chilled ‘Can’t Be Doin’ With Love’, show a far greater versatility then much of the competition and will hopefully show a wider audience what all the fuss is about.
