Jason Swinscoe’s first studio album for five years is a thing of beauty. Made to soundtrack an imagined film, it’s been nearly two years in the making with bassist Phil France and several vocalists – Lou Rhodes, Patrick Watson and Fontella Bass. France’s bass winds round some elastic lines, but the immediate stunners are Watson’s vocal on the plaintive ‘To Build A Home’ and the magnificent instrumental ‘As The Stars Fall’, where a string prelude leads up to a fuller, powerful band workout. At times soft, warm and soulful, at others dark and a bit bleak, this is a compelling listen and moves Swinscoe to the next level.
