Clark – Clark – (Warp)

I sometimes feel that Chris Clark’s thoughts are twice the speed of a normal human being. There is so much incident packed into his music that it has to be digested over several listens for all of its innovations to be properly digested. More lately his music has been a little less challenging in the sense that it uses more melodic threads than pure noise, like it used to – but if anything that is a quality that makes Clark’s music utterly appealing. At times it feels like he’s harking back to rave days of yore, while other times there is a strong sense of projecting forward into how dance music of the future is going to sound, a one-man disco that only he is fully in tune with. The concrete-heavy beats confirm that he’s not softened his approach at all, but the strong melodies that are dotted about show he’s willing to let new people in. The fact this is a self-titled album suggests it is the one of the seven albums Clark has recorded for Warp to hit the nail on the head where defining his personality is concerned. Now he’s done that, we should listen carefully to his music and appreciate the genius we have on our doorstep.
