Aldo Vanucci modestly refers to himself as ‘Plymouth’s 14th best DJ’, but it’s fair to say he’ll be moving up the rankings a bit after this. The debut album has been a while in the making, and starts with ‘When I See You Smile’, which feels like it was released an awful long time ago. That remains a fair representation of the Vanucci style, which takes old time vocals and beats of hip hop origin, splicing the two together. At times this is extremely uplifting – ‘I Love You Baby’ a prime example – and when the formula starts to wear a little thin the album senses this and applies more rap to the mix. An individual sound for sure, but one that could be viewed retrospectively rather than anything too forward looking.
