This is a curious record, seemingly influenced by a combination of Photek and Burial. From the mention of those two names you’ll gather this is mostly dark, nocturnal stuff, often with a palpable air of menace, but it also sounds totally original in the way it fuses dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass. This means that while some of the beats feel fast they’re actually slower, which creates an odd reaction in the listener’s mind, and adds to the edginess of the music. Cam McLaren is the man responsible for these soundscapes, and the Australian has a way of creating brooding, Blade Runner-like textures from very little source material, warming things up a little when the atmospheric soft synth pads are brought into play. An album that proves difficult to pin down – in the best way.
