Swedish foursome Damn! have garnered a fair bit of attention already off the back of a few singles, both in their native territory (songs playlisted on national radio), and in the US, too, providing music for shows such as Sex & The City. They’ve also just been asked to play two stages at this years Glastonbury event. Interestingly, their style is kind of hard to categorise, touching upon funk, jazz, afro, latin and rock, having honed their group sound as the backing band for Swedish rapper Timbuktu. Maybe it’s this all-encompassing approach which lends them such appeal, as they certainly don’t compromise musically. The feeling is akin to listening to a mate’s esoteric mix-tape, grooving to Herbie Hancock vocodered jazz one moment, afro-funk with enough energy to wear out Tony Aiken, then slipping into a mellow, relaxed soul joint. You get the feeling they’d be a hell of a band to catch live. Sure, some might say it’s difficult to get a handle on their sound with their air of unpredictability, but – if you need a label – isn’t good music reasonable enough? Recommended.
