Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi Present
Rome
Lex / Parlophone

The spectre of Ennio Morricone looms large over the new album from Danger Mouse, a collaboration with Daniele Luppi and vocalists including Jack White and Norah Jones. There’s nothing wrong with that, mind, as the influence is more than healthy, as ‘Rome’ is sprinkled with melodies that could be straight out of a Western film with their strong emotional pull – none more so than the opening ‘Theme of ‘Rome”. The orchestral scoring is often beautiful, and the vocalists acquit themselves very well, Norah Jones especially on ‘Season’s Trees’ and ‘Black’, and Jack White on ‘Two Versus One’, where there’s a real frisson when he sings “I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?”. Something a bit different – and proof that Danger Mouse continues to work in an original frame of mind.
