For his second album Dave Gahan looks through a much more electronic
viewpoint, creating a set of songs that are at times bleak but also
strangely uplifting. Redemption seems to be the overriding theme, with a
couple of references to the classic Depeche Mode album ‘Songs of Faith And
Devotion’. Gahan’s his own writing man now though, and while he might not
have the pop sensibilities of band partner Martin Gore, he sure knows how to
write and sing an affecting melody. Meanwhile the production works well,
particularly in the brooding soundscapes of ‘Saw Something’ and ‘Insoluble’.
A real step up from his first solo record.
