As they approach their 20th birthday celebrations, Soma retain the knack for the discovery of talented house and techno producers. Decimal fits their blueprint perfectly, with knowing nods to both styles but a sound that is recognisably his own. Originally from North Indiana, Decimal – aka David Spacek – is now more in tune with Chicago, but it doesn’t take long to confirm his style also incorporates elements of Detroit and even darker UK breaks. The latter rears its head in the intriguing, splintered beats of ‘A Physical Sense Of Time’, coming as it does after the beatless and weightless ‘Simulation’, proof that Decimal would make an accomplished soundtrack composer. More representative, perhaps, are the disco-tinged ‘Forgotten Requiem’ and ‘Soulchamber’, the pick of the album with its brightly edged house riff over a tough beat and bassline. Quality stuff, this – and versatile, too.
