Deepchord – ‘Sommer’ – (Soma Records)

For his follow-up to last year’s ‘Hash-Bar Loops’, Deepchord – aka Rod Modell – has added a few more beats to his sound, and in doing so has filled in the missing element to make a really strong album. ‘Hash-Bar Loops’ was notable for its timeless ambience, and ‘Sommer’ keeps the wisps of white noise that made it so, but it really helps to have the reassuring, full bodied sound of the kick drum to support the ambient loops. The loops are strong, too – simple but durable – and so the album moves almost imperceptibly from one track to another with ease, keeping the beat while shifting from one mood to another. Give it a few listens and you’ll fall completely under its spell, especially on headphones – a record capable of taking you on to another plane.
