Daniel Woolhouse isn’t hanging about – just a year after his debut album as Deptford Goth, the singer-producer (who probably doesn’t have that much black make-up) returns with another set of songs. Voice and production are well matched, the tender and slightly mournful vocals given some nice backdrops and softly brushed beats, reflecting Woolhouse’s relocation from London to the coast. There are some moving moments among the eleven songs here, most notably ‘Code’, which has real substance, and ‘Near To A River’, which is subtly powerful. “The rhythm of life is an irregular beat”, he sings on ‘Relics’, and as if to prove that most of the beats here are just off-kilter, which adds a bit of edge. Occasionally though our singer feels just a bit too vulnerable, the songs coming across weaker as a result, and that means ‘Songs’ – for all its good moments – is a little bit patchy and could do with a bit more depth. Still recommended if you enjoyed the first one though.
