For their fourth album, Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan go back to Detroit, effectively coming full circle from their ‘Headstates’ debut of 1996. ‘Human Response’ is their finest record since then, a collection of darker, more instrumental tracks that are intricately weaved together. The single ‘Azure’ impresses once again, but the vocal contributions, now slimmed down, are finer still – familiar collaborator Dot Allison on ‘We Medicate’ and My Robot Friend on an eerie ‘No One Left To Follow’. In returning to the style they know best, Slam show just how far they’ve come in fifteen years’ production – yet hint there’s still plenty left in the tank yet. Let this album grow and see what I mean!
