Dorian Concept – Joined Ends – (Ninja Tune)

There are a lot of one-trick ponies around where electronic music is concerned at the moment. That’s not to diminish Dorian Concept at all, but to say that there is a lot of competition and possibly pressure to make your sound unique. Happily the Austrian artist rises to the occasion with some good humour and a variety of tricks on his first album for Ninja Tune, starting out as though he’s been listening to Steve Reich on ‘The Sky Opposite’ but moving on to explore a number of different off beat styles and sounds. ‘Draft Culture’ is a good track, playing around lightly with a 303 sound, while ‘The Few’ is an invigorating play around with what sounds like a 303 sound’, and ‘Ann River, MN’ has a really nice vocal snippet going round in a loop. With plenty to occupy the listener, Joined Ends confirms Dorian Concept as one to keep an eye on.
