The Philip Hall Radar Award is a prestigious prize that is given to artists that are considered the most promising new act around, previous winners include Glasvegas and Franz Ferdinand, and this year’s winners, after just one single, are Milo Cordell & Robbie Furze aka The Big Pink. The very credible 4AD promptly signed them up, which looks like a marriage made in heaven, bearing the first fruits is the magnificent “Velvet”, smothering programmed rhythms with layers of vocal harmonies and gentle strumming which explodes into beautiful but trashy fuzz complete with feedback and spiked electronics, building into an incredibly powerful pulsing wall of sound with passionate soulful vocals to die for. If you’re into Jesus & Mary Chain, Velvet Underground and Glasvegas, then The Big Pink’s “Velvet” will make you wet your pants.
