For years, Eddie ‘Flashin” Fowlkes was overlooked in the shadow of Detroit’s Big Three, despite having been there and inventing what came to be known as ‘techno soul’ with gems like ‘Godbye Kiss’. He made his presence felt in Europe during the early 90s with outings on Infonet, Back To Basics and a titanic teamup with Blake Baxter for his long-running Tresor home which then managed to define tech-house. The man’s a pioneer and one of the true techno talents so it’s great to see him back with his first album for ten years. Even greater that it’s a strong set which strips excess to show what a bit of passion and creativity can achieve. Tracks like ‘Track Ten’ and ‘Deep Groove’ plant classic house riffs amidst uplifting Detroit stabs while ‘Static’ is typically gripping with its Manuel Gottschwing riffage, jazz-funk flavours and sundry strange electronic touches. After the shimmering space-jazz of the title cut you know you’ve experienced something a bit special. Personally, I couldn’t be happier to welcome this man back.
