Etienne Jaumet – La Visite – (Versatile Records)

Etienne Jaumet is an incredibly busy man, which explains the five year gap between solo albums one and two. In that time, among many other things, he’s been working as half of Zombie Zombie and adding his production credentials to the work of Joakim and François & The Atlas Mountains. Meanwhile the solo work has progressed strikingly, with more of a jazzy feel, the analogue instruments complemented on occasion by his own soulful saxophone. There is also more variety in the speeds Jaumet chooses, the moods changing between slow and moody (‘The Dirty Part of the Dust’) and more obviously up for it (the utterly brilliant ‘Stuck In The Shadow Of Your Love’). With an eye on French electronic musical heritage, Jaumet has also managed to come up with something original and forward looking, producing electronic music with a human and spontaneous element – improvising but never taking the piss. Give ‘La Visite’ a few spins and you’ll thoroughly enjoy his approach.
