It remains something of a mystery as to why Fink continues to be overlooked. James Blake, Jamie Woon and SBTRKT might justifiably get a lot of the singer-songwriter glories these days, but Fink has been merging his own subtle electronics with intimate thoughts long before this trio – albeit in a rather deeper though strongly emotive voice. That voice used to be a vulnerable instrument on albums like ‘Biscuits for Breakfast’, but now it sings with greater authority, and ‘Perfect Darkness’ benefits hugely from it. ‘Wheels’, a hymn to his home town of Bristol, is beautifully sculpted, while ‘Warm Shadow’ has a clever rhythmic to and fro, showing off Fink’s careful but very effective way with his arrangements. In truth there is not a weak moment in this record, which shows the singer in a more confident light than before, but still importantly laying bare his soul.
