In a move that has taken them from their homeland in Cincinnati to Berlin, Five Deez have traded buckeye for teutonic efficiency and upgraded themselves from a decidedly dull, MOR Rap act into something leftfield and certainly more interesting. The change of scenery and society has definitely regenerated their rhythmic viewpoint – the new single ‘Fugg That’ comes over like some sort of Euro-crunk, all thud and whipping hi-hats – and even when they’re making music more recognizable as Hip Hop, there’s new depth and freshness in their expansion. Much of the work here is spacey and cerebral (‘BMW’ here means ‘Black Man’s Wish’ – rather than an all-too common yearning for a Benzi with custom rims) but perfectly cut for grown-up clubs and rides – Fat Jon and Co are definitely worth a second look.
