FLYING LOTUS
1983
PLUG RESEARCH

It’s fair to assume Flying Lotus is more about exotic plant life than speeding British cars, especially given the type of music he makes. Heavily indebted to John Coltrane, this is instrumental hip hop that blends in crackly atmospherics and nicely mellowed textures. It’s quietly effective, and in well structured tracks like the wonderfully named ‘Pet Monster Shotglass’ all the elements come together well over a long, loping beat. One for the late hours, this – with just enough of an edge to push it into the foreground.
