Gusgus are back – and how. Album number five shows the Icelandic’s have no intention of going cold on us, with an excellent batch of songs that combines their love of dance music – in this case seemingly late 1980s and early 1990s – with the key to a good set of lyrics. ‘Hold You’ bears this out, with the rave-like riffing coming in on the end of a sultry P-funk number, while ‘Lust’ goes for a full, gritty electro house workout, ‘Sweetsmoke’ for a nicely breathy vocal. They have just the right vocal colour and some good lyrical writing at their disposal – and crucially back this up with some damned good production and house/electro beats. A top album – and a feel good one, too.
