Harmonic 313 is the latest name that Mark Pritchard is going under – following a highly successful stint as Harmonic 33 by taking on the number of the post code for Detroit. It’s no coincidence, as this is a record that brings together basic and effective hip hop beats with techno instrumentation. Occasionally vocals are added, and the contributions of Phat Kat & Elzhi (‘Battlestar’) and Steve Spacek (‘Falling Away’) are both excellent. But the machines in the title don’t always exceed human intelligence, and have trouble spelling ‘Harmonic’ in the amusing ‘Word Problems’. Elsewhere Pritchard toughens up to good effect in the darkly coloured ‘Call To Arms’, an indication that machines can make emotive music too. Essential if you’re already aware of Pritchard’s outstanding body of work.
