It’s very difficult to think of Hudson Mohawke as just one man, but he is just that, despite making an album that sounds like a full band. Ross Birchard carries a wealth of interesting influences, with Prince, Stevie Wonder and Outkast perhaps the standouts, but in no way is this a derivative record. ‘Twistclip Loop’ embodies the big room funk sound he creates, but by contrast ‘Rising 5’ drifts past in a dreamy haze, and ‘Tell Me What You Want From Me’ pairs bright synths with the helium vocals of DaM-FunK. Sometimes the cartoon samples make it just a little too wacky – but that’s a small quibble, as this is a record of futuristic funk, given plenty of license to roam around the dancefloor.
