Jah Wobble keeps it in the family for ‘Chinese Dub’, with his wife and children also appearing on the record. That’s because his wife, Zi Lan Liao, plays on several tracks, which also include instruments and vocals from Tibet and Mongolia. These are blended together with his trademark loping dub beat, with superb results in the thudding ‘L1 Dub’. It’s almost like you’re listening to a one-track stage play, with the opening ‘Space’ acting as an overture over its drone, gradually widening out into the peaceful ‘Silence’ and ‘Solitude’. Sonically this is an amazing record, introducing sounds the average dub listener won’t have heard, and making them either pack a punch or completely sooth the brain. It’s an intoxicating combination all round.
