James Yuill
Turning Down Water For Air (Earth & Fire Versions)

When I spoke to James Yuill on the back of his debut album ‘Turning Down Water For Air’ it was quite clear his was a very vivid sonic imagination, and that he had already conceived these songs in several different guises. So, ahead of a second eagerly awaited long player, it makes perfect sense for him to offer what is effectively a two part remix album, with the ‘Earth’ versions indulging his folksy side, while the ‘Fire’ interpretations toughen up the music for a discerning dancefloor. To this end ‘No Pins Allowed’, ‘Head Over Heels’ and ‘Ghost’ work especially well, with Yuill’s relatively soft voice given plenty of melodies to compete against, and in some cases very danceable beats. Clearly this man knows his way around his laptop.
