It wasn’t so long ago that straight suburban kids in this country were wearing make-up and emulating Bowie. One band in particular, Japan, led by androgyne deity David Sylvian, started off in the late seventies as a glam-rock proposition but soon leapt into more sophisticated territories exploring stylish soul-funk and exotic directions.
