Jimi Tenor & Tony Allen
Inspiration Information
Strut

How to describe this meeting of musical minds? ‘Intriguing’ is probably the first word that comes to hand, but ‘inspired’ will follow soon after, as the two combine with members of Allen’s band in a mixture of dancehall, afro jazz and electronica. The dancehall is enhanced by some cheeky contributions from Allonymous, while the jazzy interludes impress in their concentration of musical material. Tenor’s sax or flute rarely runs for longer than it should, so the solos are concise and meaningful, especially in the context of the song based material. The coup de grace is the final ‘Three Continents’, a fifteen minute epic that builds an irresistible groove through a constant rhythm and some freestyle up top. As ever with this series, a bit of flexibility goes a long way – and in this case, breeds another winner.
