John Foxx And The Maths – ‘The Shape Of Things’ – (Metamatic)

John Foxx And The MathsThere is simply no sign of John Foxx losing his creative thread at the moment, a thread that has seen a number of collaborative projects running side by side with this, his very fruitful work with Ben ‘Benge’ Edwards. Last year this yielded the striking ‘Interplay’ album, which is closely related to ‘The Shape Of Things’, but if anything the new songs are even better. There is more emotional input from Foxx as a vocalist this time, while the use of short atmospheric interludes in between the songs helps to set the scene. ‘September Town’ and ‘Vapour Trails’ are especially good, but it’s as a whole that this album makes the greatest impact, sharply observational but with a soft centre that makes it a moving experience. With such an intense creative zeal at the moment, John Foxx is continuing to move from strength to strength.
