John Tejada – The Predicting Machine – (Kompakt)

Consistency is the name of the game with John Tejada, and ‘The Predicting Machine’ picks up just where ‘Parabolas’ left off last year, with a typically cultured and stylish approach. Here though we find Tejada willing to experiment with no drum track at all, as he does in the Steve Reich homage that is ‘Winter Skies’, while ‘Radio Channel’ is also suspended in space, a beautiful piece. There is some deeply personal music here – ‘Glaringly Happy’ perhaps the most intimate – while ‘The Function And The Form’ show that Tejada can add a bit of steel to the beats and synth sounds when he needs to. If anything he could do with adding a bit more edge to the music, but that’s a relatively minor quibble when the productions are as solid and dependable as these.
