Old school in sound, old school in approach, Sweden’s Dungen adopt a similar approach to some hip-hop producers, even though they may be poles apart musically. Founding member Gustav Ejstes creates the core ideas and building blocks before inviting others to help create the finished song. The result is often complex, ideas and melodies chasing themselves in circles, difficult to pin to it’s obvious 70’s psychedelic rock and folk references. But once you come to know the Dungen sound (this is their third and most fully fleshed album) it all makes for a curious kind of symmetry. Not likely to be troubling the charts or clubs any time soon, yet it’s easy to see why this group command the respect and following they do.
